  • Born in Nova Scotia, British Canada, and later moved to the United States.
  • Attended Maine Wesleyan Seminary and taught school in New Bedford, Massachusetts before moving to Missouri.
  • Held various educational and municipal positions including principal of a public school and comptroller of St. Louis.
  • Served as postmaster of St. Louis and was a member of the board of police commissioners.
  • Played a significant role in the framing of the charter of St. Louis as a member of the board of freeholders.
  • Appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy, serving from 1877 to 1879.
  • Was involved in the 1877 cavalry attack on strikers during the St. Louis General Strike, commanding police action.
  • Did not seek reelection to the Senate after his term ended.
  • Died in St. Louis and was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
  • Was a member of the Democratic Party.
