- Became a lawyer after the war and practiced law in Mississippi.

- Did not seek renomination after his second term in Congress.
- Resumed his law practice in West Point, Mississippi, until his death.
- Died at the age of 64 and was buried in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery, Aberdeen, Mississippi.
