- Participated as a delegate in the Democratic National Conventions in 1960 and 1964.
- Appointed by President Kennedy as assistant to the Secretary of Agriculture from 1963 to 1966.
- Ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1966.
- His congressional career ended after his district was merged with another, leading to his defeat in the 1962 election.
