Death
- Served as a United States senator from Washington from 1889 to 1893.
- Served as the United States representative from Washington Territory’s at-large congressional district in 1889.
- Served as a private in the Union Army during the American Civil War with the 135th Indiana Volunteers.
- Earned a law degree from the University of Michigan and passed the bar in 1869.
- Moved to Washington in 1870 and started a law practice in Olympia.
- Served as United States Attorney for the District of Washington from 1875 to 1885.
- Served as reporter for the supreme court for the Territory of Washington from 1878 to 1885.
- After Washington achieved statehood, was elected to the United States Senate; served until 1893 after which was appointed by the Governor of Washington but was not seated by the Senate.
- Pursued a career in private law practice in Seattle, Washington after leaving public office.
- Died of cardiovascular disease in 1903.
- John B. Allen Elementary School, named in his honor, was inaugurated in 1904 in the Seattle School District.
