- American physician and statesman from New Jersey.
- Born in Pennsylvania as the oldest of ten children in a prominent family with connections to early American leadership.
- Graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton University) in 1769.
- Served as a major in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and was captured at Fort Washington.
- Held various political positions, including member of the New Jersey Legislative Council, delegate to the Continental Congress, Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly, and U.S. House of Representatives member.
- Voted against the Eleventh Amendment to the U.S. Constitution while in Congress.
- Served as Secretary of State of New Jersey for a decade.
- Married to Catherine DeKlyn, with whom he had two children.
