- Served as the 13th Governor of North Carolina from 1805 to 1807
- Born in 1756 in what was then Anson County in the Province of North Carolina
- Son of a local sheriff
- Earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1776
- Commissioned as a surgeon in the North Carolina Line in 1779, serving through the American Revolutionary War until 1782
- Practiced medicine near Santee, South Carolina, after the war
- Elected to the North Carolina House of Commons in 1797 and the North Carolina Senate in 1801
- Served in the United States House of Representatives from 1803 to 1805
- Declined to run for a third term as governor
- Enjoyed support from both Democratic-Republicans and Federalists
- Oversaw the resolution of a boundary dispute with Georgia, expansion of state’s district courts, and growth of the state’s educational system during his governorship
- Was president of The University of North Carolina Board of Trustees while serving as governor
- Died in Salisbury, North Carolina, in 1808 and is buried in Old Settlers’ Cemetery in Charlotte, North Carolina
- Married a daughter of Colonel Thomas Polk but had no children
