- Served as a U.S. Congressman from North Carolina for two non-consecutive terms (1847-1849 and 1868-1869)
- Born in Massachusetts and moved to North Carolina after graduating from Union College in New York
- Initially worked as a teacher before studying law and practicing in North Carolina
- Elected to the North Carolina House of Commons in 1838 and 1840, and to the North Carolina Senate in 1844
- Was a member of the Whig party during his first term in Congress
- After the Civil War, participated in the 1865 North Carolina Constitutional Convention
- Elected to Congress as a Conservative after the war and was the sole non-Republican to vote in favor of the 15th Amendment
- Unsuccessfully contested an election to the 41st United States Congress
- Elected associate justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court in 1872 and served until his death in 1873
- Married to Jane Caroline Henderson, daughter of a notable North Carolina politician
