Death

  • Served as both a U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from Louisiana.
  • Attended Georgetown University and graduated from Tulane University Law School.
  • Worked as a night inspector of customs and later as an assistant weigher and statistician in New Orleans.
  • Elected as prosecuting attorney for the Nineteenth Judicial District from 1892 to 1897.
  • Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1897 and served until 1915, participating in eight consecutive Congresses.
  • Chaired the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of Justice during the Sixty-third Congress.
  • Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1912 and served until his death in 1918, also chairing the Committee on National Banks.
  • Introduced the “American Hippo Bill” in 1910, which aimed to address meat shortages and invasive plant species in Louisiana.
  • Member of The Boston Club of New Orleans.
