- Born in Sidney, New York
- Attended Unadilla Academy, Cooperstown Seminary, and Walton Academy in Upstate New York
- Taught school for several years before enlisting in the Civil War
- Enlisted as a private in the 43rd Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry in 1861; discharged in 1862 due to a wound leading to the amputation of his right arm
- Studied law at the University of Michigan from 1868 to 1872
- Admitted to the bar in Ann Arbor in May 1875 and commenced practice in Ludington, Michigan
- Elected prosecuting attorney of Mason County in 1876, 1878, and 1884
- Member of the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1882 and 1892
- Chairman of the House Committee on Ventilation and Acoustics during the 57th through 59th Congresses
- Unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination in 1906; resumed law practice afterward
- Member of the Michigan constitutional convention in 1907
- Appointed to the Spanish Treaty Claims Commission in December 1907
- Moved to Hollister, California, in 1910 and engaged in fruit growing
- Died in Pacific Grove, California, in 1920; interred at El Carmelo Cemetery
- His former home in Ludington has been the rectory of Grace Episcopal Church since 1945
