Graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a degree in social work and later received a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law
Appointed as presiding judge of the Houston Municipal System in the early 1980s, serving five terms under two mayors
Became Houston city controller in 1998
Elected to the Harris County Commissioner’s Court in 2002, the first woman and first Latina to hold that post in her own right
Defeated in 2010 for reelection to the Harris County Commissioner’s Court
Won a special election runoff for the Texas Senate in 2013, serving until 2018
Ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018, winning the election and becoming one of the first Latina congresswomen from Texas
Selected as one of seven House impeachment managers for President Donald Trump’s trial in 2020
Serves on the Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on the Judiciary, among others
