Served as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives for Connecticut’s 4th district from 1857 to 1859.
Held positions in the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1866 and 1871, and in the Connecticut Senate from 1877 to 1878.
Was president of both the Naugatuck Railroad Company and the New York and New Haven Railroad Company.
Graduated from Yale College in 1849, studied law, but chose not to practice.
Involved in his father’s railroad enterprises, contributing to the construction of several railroads in Connecticut and New York.
Founded the Eastern Railroad Association and served as its president until his death.
Chaired the Committee on Manufactures during the Thirty-fifth Congress.
Served as Commissioner of Patents from May 23, 1859, to January 1860.
Was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Connecticut in 1860.
Died of chronic endocarditis in 1904 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and was cremated with his ashes interred at Mountain Grove Cemetery.
Married Julia A. Tomlinson in 1850 and had six children.
