SRO Funding Protection Act of 2024

Legislation Details

Amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to require states to maintain funding for school resource officer (SRO) programs in elementary and secondary schools.
States must maintain funding at least equal to the amount spent in the most recent fiscal year prior to the enactment of the legislation.
States must submit an annual certification of compliance to the Secretary, including a public report detailing funding amounts and the number of SROs employed.
The Secretary can grant waivers for states demonstrating extraordinary financial circumstances that led to reduced funding for SRO programs.
If a state fails to meet the funding requirement and does not receive a waiver, the Secretary will reduce the state’s eligible funding for the following fiscal year proportionally based on the funding shortfall.
Defines “school resource officer” as per the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968.
