Authorizes the Attorney General to create a pilot program for grants to support veterans response teams in law enforcement agencies.
Grants can be awarded to states, local governments, and Indian Tribal governments.
Veterans response teams may include:
Identification pins for veteran law enforcement officers.
Utilization of the Veterans Re-Entry Search Service.
Communication systems with the Department of Veterans Affairs and community resources.
Collaboration with Veterans Justice Outreach specialists and local justice systems.
Training for law enforcement on mental health issues related to military service.
Regular meetings to discuss veterans’ community issues and responses.
Coordinated response teams available 24/7 for veterans in crisis.
Development of success measurement plans and tracking best practices.
Opportunities for ongoing contact between veterans and response teams.
Creation of teams involves:
Identifying committed law enforcement leaders and team members.
Engaging community members and organizations in the team.
Immersing team members in the veteran community through events and incidents.
Providing crisis training for team members and other law enforcement officers.
The program’s authority will terminate five years after enactment.
The Attorney General must report to Congress on the program’s progress, including grant statistics and other relevant information.
