Legislation Details
- Amends the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to ensure individuals apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection have access to temporary shelter, food, and water.
- Requires the provision of appropriate temporary shelter with bathroom and shower facilities, water, nutrition, hygiene items, and sanitation needs.
- Mandates regular audits and inspections of detention facilities by the Department of Homeland Security’s Inspector General and the Comptroller General, including unannounced inspections.
- Ensures that Members of Congress and designated employees can access detention facilities for oversight purposes without obstruction.
- Prohibits temporary modifications to facilities that would alter what is observed by visiting Members of Congress or their designated employees.
- Authorizes the taking of photographs or recordings of facility conditions by authorized individuals, with restrictions on publishing identifiable information without permission.
