The legislation mandates the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to update regulations regarding bleed air systems in aircraft.
New turbine and turbo-prop aircraft designs will be prohibited from using bleed air systems.
Starting seven years after enactment, newly manufactured aircraft with bleed air systems must include filters or air cleaning devices to remove oil fumes.
A phased approach is established for phasing out bleed air systems in existing aircraft designs:
25% of such aircraft must be manufactured without bleed air systems within 10 years.
50% must be manufactured without bleed air systems within 20 years.
100% must be manufactured without bleed air systems within 30 years.
The term “bleed air system” is defined as a system that uses compressed air from an aircraft engine or auxiliary power unit, providing pressurized air for ventilation that could be inhaled by passengers or crew.
