CHN is concerned about attacks on the basic needs and civil rights of D.C. residents. We also oppose efforts to undermine the ability of D.C. to self-govern through attacks on local democratic institutions or laws approved by D.C. voters. Ultimately, CHN supports statehood for the people living in the District of Columbia. We echo the concerns of others that attacks against D.C. are a worrying sign of federal overreach, which threaten democracy itself along with the fundamental principle of self-governance. D.C.s nearly 700,000 residents continue to be uniquely vulnerable to Congressional and federal overreach, exemplified by the bills before you this week. As a diverse and vibrant city, we are concerned that the bills before you this week overcriminalize D.C. residents, including youth, disproportionately harm Black and Brown communities, and fail to make our neighborhoods safer.
