Was an American politician and judge in the 19th century.
Graduated from Princeton College in 1837 and practiced law after being admitted to the bar.
Served as examiner in chancery of Greene County between 1840 and 1842, and as a Justice of the Peace in Catskill for four years.
Held a position in the New York State Assembly representing Greene County in 1849.
Served as Judge of Greene County Court from 1851 to 1855.
Moved to Rome, New York in 1856 and continued his law practice.
Was a member of the New York State Senate from 1862 to 1865, participating in the 85th through 88th New York State Legislatures.
Elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving from November 30, 1867, to March 3, 1871, and was Chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State during his tenure.
Did not seek renomination in 1870 but was elected judge of the Oneida County Court in 1871, a position he held until his death.
Died in Rome, Oneida County, New York, on April 20, 1874, and is buried in Rome Cemetery.
