Served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for three terms from 1975 to 1981.
Was the first Democrat to represent Wisconsin’s 3rd congressional district in 66 years during his tenure in Congress.
Served 16 years in the Wisconsin State Assembly across two periods (1966–1975 and 1989–1997).
Born in Garner, Iowa, and graduated from high school in Elkton, Minnesota, before attending Riverland Community College in Austin, Minnesota.
Served in the United States Merchant Marine (1944–1946) and the United States Army during the Korean War (1951–1953).
Married Lorayne Reiten in 1959, with whom he had six children and remained married until his death in 2017.
Died at his home in Menomonie, Wisconsin, on February 2, 2017, at the age of 90 and was buried at St Joseph’s Catholic Church Cemetery.
His eldest daughter, Deb McGrath, ran for his former congressional seat in the 2022 election but lost in the Democratic primary.
