- Born in Davidson County, Tennessee, and moved to Mayfield, Kentucky in 1833
- Attended public schools and later studied law, admitted to the bar in 1852
- Elected judge of the Graves County court in 1854, reelected in 1858, and served until 1861
- Member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1861
- Served as a circuit judge for the first judicial district of Kentucky from 1868 to 1874
- Elected to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1875, to March 3, 1879
- Did not seek reelection in 1878
- Chairman of the Kentucky Railroad Commission from 1882 to 1886
- Died in Mayfield, Kentucky, and was buried in Mayfield Cemetery
