  • Born and died in Winnfield, Louisiana
  • Educated at Louisiana State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1914
  • Taught in rural schools and served as a school principal and superintendent in Winn Parish
  • Admitted to the bar in 1922 and practiced law in Winnfield
  • Married Lottie Mae Thompson and had two sons
  • Served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1936
  • Chaired the Committee on the Census during his time in Congress
  • Did not seek re-election in 1952, allowing George Shannon “Doc” Long to run for his seat
  • Opposed the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1943 and introduced the Renunciation Act of 1944
  • Died on his 78th birthday and is buried in Winnfield Cemetery
  • Posthumously inducted into the Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame in 1994
  • The municipal building in Winnfield is named in his honor
