- Was an educator, attorney, and U.S. Representative for eight terms
- Born and died in Winnfield, Louisiana
- Educated at Louisiana State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1914
- Taught in rural schools and served as a school principal and superintendent in Winn Parish
- Admitted to the bar in 1922 and practiced law in Winnfield
- Married Lottie Mae Thompson and had two sons
- Served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1936
- Chaired the Committee on the Census during his time in Congress
- Did not seek re-election in 1952, allowing George Shannon “Doc” Long to run for his seat
- Opposed the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1943 and introduced the Renunciation Act of 1944
- Died on his 78th birthday and is buried in Winnfield Cemetery
- Posthumously inducted into the Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame in 1994
- The municipal building in Winnfield is named in his honor
