Born in Salina, New York, and moved to Michigan in 1837.
Worked as a schoolteacher before studying law and becoming a practicing attorney.
Served in the Michigan State House of Representatives from 1844 to 1846, including a term as Speaker.
Held the position of prosecuting attorney for Oakland County in the early 1850s.
Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for the 38th Congress, representing Michigan’s 5th congressional district.
Participated as a delegate in multiple Democratic National Conventions during the 1860s.
Served on the Pontiac School Board for 18 years and was mayor of Pontiac in 1874.
Appointed as a judge of the sixth judicial circuit court of Michigan from 1875 until his resignation in 1880.
Involved with the board of trustees of the Eastern Michigan Asylum.
Passed away in Pontiac, Michigan, at the age of 85 and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
