  • Named in honor of the famous Benedict Arnold during a time when he was considered a hero of the United States.
  • Born in Schaghticoke, Albany County, New York, which later became part of Rensselaer County.
  • Son of Elisha and Sarah Francisco Arnold.
  • Attended local schools and became a successful merchant.
  • Married Mary ‘Polly’ Bovee and had twelve children.
  • Owned large stretches of land and dedicated much time to philanthropy.
  • Served as a member of the New York State Assembly in 1816 and 1817.
  • Elected to the Twenty-first United States Congress as an Anti-Jacksonian, serving from March 4, 1829, to March 3, 1831.
  • Did not seek reelection after his term in Congress.
  • Was president of the board of trustees of the village of Amsterdam in 1832.
  • Lived in retirement in Amsterdam, New York, until his death.
  • Died on March 3, 1849, and is interred at Green Hill Cemetery in Amsterdam, New York.
