- Named in honor of the famous Benedict Arnold during a time when he was considered a hero of the United States.
- Born in Schaghticoke, Albany County, New York, which later became part of Rensselaer County.
- Son of Elisha and Sarah Francisco Arnold.
- Attended local schools and became a successful merchant.
- Married Mary ‘Polly’ Bovee and had twelve children.
- Owned large stretches of land and dedicated much time to philanthropy.
- Served as a member of the New York State Assembly in 1816 and 1817.
- Elected to the Twenty-first United States Congress as an Anti-Jacksonian, serving from March 4, 1829, to March 3, 1831.
- Did not seek reelection after his term in Congress.
- Was president of the board of trustees of the village of Amsterdam in 1832.
- Lived in retirement in Amsterdam, New York, until his death.
- Died on March 3, 1849, and is interred at Green Hill Cemetery in Amsterdam, New York.
