Born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and later moved to Salem, Washington County, New York.
Attended public schools and pursued preparatory studies before graduating from Williams College in 1825.
Studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1828, and later became a counselor and solicitor in chancery.
Married Charlotte Lansing.
Was a delegate to the Whig National Convention from New York in 1839.
Served as a U.S. Representative for New York’s twelfth district from March 4, 1841, to March 3, 1843.
After serving in Congress, he left the practice of law and engaged in business pursuits.
Died in Salem, New York, on May 7, 1880.
