Born in 1955 in Madison, Wisconsin.
Attended James Madison Memorial High School.
Earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University.
Co-founded a leading manufacturer of theatrical lighting, ETC, with his brother at the age of 19.
Worked for 22 years at Fermilab, participating in significant projects including the discovery of the top quark and the design and construction of a 3 km Anti-Proton Recycler Ring.
Elected a fellow of the American Physical Society in 1998 and has received multiple awards for his contributions to physics.
Served as the U.S. representative for Illinois’s 14th congressional district from 2008 to 2011 and has been serving the 11th congressional district since 2013.
Has a record of supporting labor unions, healthcare reform, financial regulation, and has opposed efforts to repeal the estate tax.
Voted for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Opposed the American Clean Energy and Security Act, which would have created a cap and trade system.
Has expressed views on the reinterpretation of the Second Amendment in light of technological changes.
Supported Israel with a vote to provide support following a 2023 attack.
Has been successful in multiple elections, demonstrating strong support in his district.
Lives in Naperville, Illinois, with his wife, Aesook Byon, and has two adult children from his first marriage.
