Death

  • Born in Saltillo, Mexico, in 1867, and moved to San Antonio, Texas, at a young age.
  • Educated in public schools and the Agricultural and Mechanical College; studied law while working as a railway mail clerk.
  • Admitted to the bar in 1893 and began a law practice in San Antonio.
  • Joined the Democratic Party and held various positions, including United States commissioner for the western district of Texas and district attorney of the thirty-seventh judicial district.
  • Served as a delegate and chairman at the Democratic National Conventions in 1904 and 1908.
  • Held positions on the city school board of San Antonio and as president of the county school board of Bexar County.
  • Elected to the Texas State Senate, serving from 1915 to 1919.
  • Served as a U.S. Representative from Texas from 1919 to 1921.
  • Returned to law practice after an unsuccessful re-election bid in 1920.
  • Passed away in San Antonio in 1932; buried in the Confederate Cemetery.
  • His son later became mayor of Hayward, California, and served in the California State Assembly.
