Death
- Served as a U.S. Congressman from North Carolina from 1922 to 1935.
- Elected in a special election to fill a vacancy and re-elected for five additional terms.
- Practiced law after being admitted to the bar in 1895 and held the position of solicitor for twelve years.
- Founded a local newspaper, the Beaufort Herald, in Beaufort, North Carolina.
- Involved in the North Carolina Democratic Party as a member of its executive committee.
- Moved to New Bern, North Carolina, in 1913, where he continued his legal practice.
- Defeated in his bid for re-election in 1934 and retired from law practice in 1938.
- Died in 1955 and is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
- Related to Arthur Talmage Abernethy, North Carolina’s first Poet Laureate.
