Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1867.
Graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1889 and earned a master’s degree in 1891.
Obtained a PhD from Harvard University in 1894.
Studied at various European universities, including Berlin, Strasbourg, and Paris, from 1894 to 1896.
Had a distinguished academic career, serving as a philosophy instructor at Harvard and the University of California, and as a professor at Bryn Mawr College and Yale University.
Served as president of the American Philosophical Association in 1910.
Contributed to the American Red Cross during World War I, serving in Italy as a major and deputy commissioner.
Elected to the Connecticut State Senate as a Republican, serving from 1920 to 1924.
Chaired the state commission that revised Connecticut’s educational laws from 1921 to 1923.
Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving one term from 1933 to 1935.
Was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1936.
Died in New Haven, Connecticut in 1957 and was buried at Grove Street Cemetery.
