Served as a U.S. Representative for New Hampshire’s 2nd congressional district in two non-consecutive terms (1995–2007 and 2011–2013).
Son of Perkins Bass, a former U.S. Congressman, and grandson of Robert Bass, a former Republican governor of New Hampshire.
Attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1974.
Worked for Republican U.S. Congressmen William Cohen and David F. Emery in the 1970s.
Served in the New Hampshire General Court from 1982 to 1988.
Elected to the New Hampshire Senate in 1988, serving until 1992.
Supported tort reform and some abortion rights during his time in the New Hampshire Senate.
Ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary for the U.S. House in 1980; won the seat in 1994 and was re-elected multiple times until defeated in 2006. Regained the seat in 2010 but was defeated again in 2012.
Signed Newt Gingrich’s Contract With America in 1994.
Was among the first to demand Tom DeLay step aside as House Majority Leader in 2005.
Supports abortion rights in line with Roe v. Wade, opposes federal funding for abortion, and supports banning partial-birth abortions.
Advocates for environmental protection and alternative energy sources, acknowledging the existence of global climate change.
Opposes the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, advocating instead for an interstate health insurance market.
Supported same-sex marriage after leaving office.
Served on various committees and caucuses, including the Committee on Energy and Commerce and the Congressional Arts Caucus.
Worked as a business consultant to renewable energy companies between his congressional terms.
Considered running for the U.S. Senate in 2014 but ultimately did not.
Endorsed John Kasich for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.
Member of the ReFormers Caucus of Issue One.
Resides in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
