Worked as a school teacher before studying and practicing law.
Served as prosecuting attorney of Andrew County before and after practicing law in Savannah, Missouri.
Engaged in the loan and real estate business in addition to law practice.
Held the position of mayor in Savannah, Missouri, for four years.
Served briefly in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1889 to fill a vacancy.
Elected again to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1907 and served until his death in 1921.
Did not seek renomination in 1920 and passed away in 1921.
Buried in City Cemetery, Savannah, Missouri.
