Attended Girard (Pennsylvania) Academy and graduated from Western Reserve College (now Case Western Reserve University) in 1877 as Phi Beta Kappa.
Married Corinne Marie Tuckerman and had seven children, with notable descendants including Florence E. Allen, the first woman to serve on a state supreme court and a federal court.
Two of his sons died in World War I.
Was a collegiate baseball pitcher credited with perfecting the curveball.
Served as an instructor of Greek at Western Reserve College before moving to Utah, where he engaged in mining and became involved in politics.
Played a significant role in Utah’s education system, authoring a bill that provided free public schools for students aged six to eighteen, earning him the title “Father of Utah’s Free Schools.”
Served in the territorial House of Representatives and as county clerk of Salt Lake County before being admitted to the bar.
Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Utah, serving from 1896 to 1897, and declined renomination.
Returned to mining until retiring in 1922 and spent his final years in Columbus, Ohio, before passing away in Escondido, California.
His body was cremated and ashes interred in Salt Lake City’s Mount Olivet Cemetery.
