Born in Groton, Connecticut Colony, and attended common schools.
Served in the Connecticut Militia, achieving ranks of ensign, lieutenant, and captain.
Moved to Aurora, New York, in 1795 and became a landowner.
Elected as a Democratic-Republican to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing two different congressional districts over multiple terms.
Held office from March 4, 1811, to March 3, 1815, and again from September 30, 1816, to March 3, 1817.
Managed his estate after his congressional service and worked with the land office in Albany for twenty years.
Died in Aurora, New York, at the age of 75 and is buried at Oak Glen Cemetery.
