Attended common schools and graduated from Union College in 1823.
Admitted to the bar in 1825 and began practicing law in Oswego, New York.
Held various local government positions, including trustee, district attorney, supervisor, treasurer, and president of the Village of Oswego.
Served as an associate judge of the court of Common Pleas from 1833 to 1841.
Elected to two terms in the U.S. Congress from 1839 to 1843.
Appointed Postmaster of Oswego in 1845 and served until 1849.
Engaged in agricultural pursuits after his political career.
Served as president of the excise board commission in 1870 for three years.
Died in Oswego, New York, and was interred at Riverside Cemetery.
