Served as a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from New York during the 1940s.
Elected to Congress in 1944 to fill a vacancy and served until 1949.
Strongly supported the Taft-Hartley Act, which was opposed by organized labor.
Voted in favor of a proposal to ban the poll tax, aimed at increasing voting access for southern blacks.
Opposed the establishment of the Fresh Kills Landfill while representing Staten Island.
Held various positions in education, including vice president and president of the New York City Board of Education.
Worked as a meteorology instructor in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War I.
Shot and seriously wounded in 1949 by a disgruntled individual after denying an appeal for reinstatement.
Served as a delegate to the 1952 Republican National Convention and held roles in trade and international affairs in the mid-1950s.
Died in 1970 and was cremated, with his ashes placed in Thunder Mountain Ranch Cemetery.
