  • Attended local schools, a private school, and Mercer University for two years.
  • Began studying law in 1855 and was admitted to the bar in 1856.
  • Briefly served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War but was discharged due to ill health.
  • Appointed solicitor general of the Flint circuit during the Civil War.
  • Served as a U.S. Representative for Georgia for a short term from December 2, 1872, to March 3, 1873.
  • Did not seek renomination in 1872 and returned to practicing law.
  • Served as judge of the city court of Griffin from 1890 until his death in 1898.
  • Was a slave owner.
  • Died in Griffin, Georgia, and was interred in Oak Hill Cemetery.
