- Attended Litchfield Law School and studied law under Nathan Dane
- Admitted to the bar in 1800 and commenced practice in Stockbridge, Massachusetts
- Served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1805 to 1806
- Elected to the 10th, 11th, and 12th United States Congresses, serving from 1807 to 1813
- Served as chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means during the 12th Congress
- Was chief justice of the Court of Common Pleas for the Western District of Massachusetts from 1811 to 1814
- Served as Comptroller of the U.S. Treasury from 1814 to 1815
- Moved to Utica, New York, in 1816
- Appointed as an associate judge of the Oneida County Court in 1818
- Served in the New York State Assembly in 1819
- Was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1821
- Ran for Congress in 1826 but was defeated
- At the time of his death, was the oldest surviving Member of Congress and the last representative of President James Madison’s administration
