  • Elected to the 10th, 11th, and 12th United States Congresses, serving from 1807 to 1813
  • Served as chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means during the 12th Congress
  • Was chief justice of the Court of Common Pleas for the Western District of Massachusetts from 1811 to 1814
  • Served as Comptroller of the U.S. Treasury from 1814 to 1815
  • Moved to Utica, New York, in 1816
  • Appointed as an associate judge of the Oneida County Court in 1818
  • Served in the New York State Assembly in 1819
  • Was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1821
  • Ran for Congress in 1826 but was defeated
  • At the time of his death, was the oldest surviving Member of Congress and the last representative of President James Madison’s administration
