Death
- Born in Chester, Vermont, and later moved to New York and Michigan.
- Worked as a teacher before studying law and becoming a lawyer.
- Held various legal positions, including prosecuting attorney for Lenawee County and city attorney of Adrian.
- Involved in the founding of the Republican Party in Michigan in 1854.
- Served as a delegate to the first Republican National Convention in 1856.
- Elected mayor of Adrian in 1856 and served as judge of the probate court of Lenawee County from 1856 to 1860.
- Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1861 to 1871, representing both the 2nd and 1st congressional districts of Michigan.
- Chaired the House Committee on Roads and Canals during the Thirty-ninth Congress.
- Returned to legal practice after declining renomination in 1870.
- Reappointed and later elected as judge of probate court of Lenawee County in the early 1870s.
- Declined appointments to the U.S. Senate and Michigan Supreme Court due to health issues.
