Death
- Served as a high school teacher and labor leader before entering politics.
- Held the position of Secretary of Labor for the state under Governor Adlai Stevenson II from 1949 to 1952.
- Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1964 and served for 28 years, being re-elected 13 times.
- Chaired several committees, including the House Administration Committee.
- Advocated for consumer rights, notably urging people to burn credit cards to combat high interest rates in 1989.
- Passed away in 2001 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.
