Death
- Served as a U.S. Representative and Senator from Connecticut.
- Graduated from Yale College and was a member of the Skull and Bones society.
- Began his political career in the Connecticut House of Representatives, where he also served as Speaker.
- Held the position of Corporation Counsel for New London multiple times.
- Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to fill a vacancy and served three terms.
- Resigned from the House to fill a Senate vacancy and was subsequently reelected three times.
- Identified as a conservative “Old Guard” Republican, opposing women’s suffrage and the League of Nations.
- Chaired several Senate committees, including Judiciary and Interoceanic Canals.
- Served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Sixty-second Congress.
- Died by suicide in 1924, reportedly due to ill health and financial difficulties.
