Served as a U.S. Representative from Illinois’s 12th congressional district from 1887 to 1889.
Born in Virginia and moved to Illinois at a young age.
Attended common schools and graduated from Carthage College in 1876.
Studied law in Nebraska and Missouri, and was admitted to the bar in 1878.
Began practicing law in Quincy, Illinois, in 1880.
Elected city attorney of Quincy in 1884 and 1885.
Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat for the Fiftieth Congress.
Did not seek renomination after his term in Congress.
Continued practicing law until his death in 1896.
Buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Quincy, Illinois.
