American businessman and politician active in the 19th century.
Served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1837 to 1838.
Elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving two non-consecutive terms: from 1849 to 1853 and from 1859 to 1861.
Initially a member of the Whig Party, later affiliated with the Republican Party.
Chaired the Committee on Revolutionary Claims during his time in Congress.
Declined renomination for Congress in 1852 and 1860, subsequently retiring from politics.
Participated as a delegate at the National Union Convention in 1866.
Died at his summer home in Saratoga Springs, New York, and was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
