Served as a US Representative from North Carolina between 1935 and 1961.
Served in the United States Navy as a seaman during World War I.
Attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1920.
Briefly practiced law and taught high school before becoming a judge in the Craven County courts until 1924.
Elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1932.
Won thirteen consecutive terms in the United States House of Representatives.
Chaired the House Education Committee during the 78th and 79th Congresses and became chairman of the Education and Labor Committee in the 81st, 82nd, 84th, 85th, and 86th sessions.
Was a signatory to the 1956 Southern Manifesto opposing the desegregation of public schools.
Did not seek re-election in 1960 and passed away in 1967.
A biography was published in 1979 by Campbell University Press.
Graham A. Barden Elementary School in Havelock, North Carolina is named in his honor.
