  • Attended common schools and graduated from Augusta College, Kentucky, and Marietta College, Ohio.
  • Studied law and was admitted to the bar in Chillicothe, Ohio, in 1853.
  • Commenced law practice in Marion, Arkansas, before moving to Bloomington, Illinois, in 1855, and then to Canton, Illinois, the same year.
  • Served on the city board of education and the board of supervisors in Canton.
  • Elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving from March 4, 1873, to March 3, 1875.
  • Was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1874.
  • Resumed the practice of law after his term in Congress.
  • Died in Canton, Illinois, and was interred in Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.
  • Was the nephew of Nelson Barrere.
