- Served as a five-term congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives.
- First Mormon to represent Idaho in Congress.
- Held the position of chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) during the Nixon administration.
- Graduated from Stanford University and the University of Idaho College of Law.
- Worked as an attorney in private practice before entering politics.
- Served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander.
- Participated in state legislature prior to congressional service.
- Voted against the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1960.
