Admitted to the bar in 1856 and began practicing law in Juneau, Wisconsin.
Served as prosecuting attorney of Jefferson County, Wisconsin in 1861 and 1862.
Held the position of assistant attorney general of Wisconsin in 1865 and 1866.
Relocated to Chicago, Illinois, in 1866 to resume his law practice.
Served as a U.S. Representative for one term from 1879 to 1881.
Was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1880.
Appointed as receiver of the land office at Mitchell, South Dakota from 1881 to 1888.
Returned to Chicago to continue his law practice after his service in South Dakota.
Served as master in chancery of the Cook County Superior Court from 1891 to 1914.
Retired from public life and active business pursuits later in life.
Died in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and was buried in Juneau Cemetery, Wisconsin.
His father was Hiram Barber, a noted politician and pioneer.
