  • Elected mayor on a reform platform, defeating the incumbent mayor associated with a corrupt political machine.
  • His administration faced a corruption investigation following the 1967 Newark riots, leading to indictments for kickbacks from city contractors.
  • Found guilty on multiple counts of conspiracy and extortion in 1970, resulting in a ten-year prison sentence and a $25,000 fine.
  • Released on parole after serving approximately half of his sentence.
  • Died of cardiac arrest in 1981.
