Scottish-born American politician who immigrated to the United States and settled in Vermont.
Studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1845, beginning his legal practice in Newnan, Georgia, in 1846.
Served in the Georgia State Senate in 1855 and 1857.
Participated as a delegate in the Democratic National Conventions in 1856 and 1868.
Acted as a presidential elector for the Democratic ticket in 1860.
Enlisted in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, serving as a Captain in the Phillips Georgia Legion Cavalry Battalion.
Wounded in the chest during the Battle of Trevilian Station in June 1864.
Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for the Thirty-ninth Congress, but did not serve due to the state’s lack of representation.
Appointed as a judge of the superior court of the Coweta circuit from August 1872 until September 1880.
Served as a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1877.
Elected to the Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1881, to March 3, 1885.
Did not seek renomination in 1884.
Died in Newnan, Georgia, and was interred in Oak Hill Cemetery.
