- Served as a U.S. House of Representatives member from Ohio for 22 years, from 1951 to 1973.
- Held the position of Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1945 to 1947.
- Practiced law after graduating from Yale Law School in 1929 and served as the prosecuting attorney for Hancock County, Ohio, from 1933 to 1937.
- Elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, serving from 1937 to 1947.
- Voted in favor of significant civil rights legislation, including the Civil Rights Acts of 1957, 1960, 1964, and 1968, as well as the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
- After leaving Congress, worked as a part-time teacher at Findlay College and served as an acting judge for Findlay Municipal Court.
- Lived in Findlay, Ohio, for most of his life and passed away there in 1993 at the age of 89.
