Served as U.S. Representative for Texas from 1913 until his death in 1937.
Born in South Carolina but moved to Texas in the same year of his birth.
Received a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1889.
Began his law practice in Washington County, Texas, and quickly became involved in politics.
Held positions as county justice of the peace, county prosecuting attorney, and district attorney before entering the Texas House of Representatives.
Elected to the Sixty-third Congress to fill a vacancy and subsequently reelected eleven times.
Served as chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations from 1933 until his death.
Was a member of the Miller Group, conservative Democrats opposed to Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal.
Died in Washington, D.C., and was buried in Brenham, Texas.
Succeeded in Congress by Lyndon B. Johnson, who later became the 36th President of the United States.
Buchanan Dam and Lake Buchanan in Texas are named in his honor.
