Served as a United States Congressman from New York, holding office for two terms between 1883 and 1887.
Born in what is now part of Miramichi, emigrated to the United States in 1864.
Worked in a dry-goods firm before studying law at Columbia Law School, graduating in 1876.
Admitted to the bar the same year he graduated from law school.
Involved in several businesses, including the Adams Mining Company in Leadville, Colorado, alongside his brothers who were also politically active in Canada and Colorado.
Represented New York’s 8th congressional district in the forty-eighth Congress and the 7th district in the Fiftieth Congress.
Did not seek renomination in 1886 and returned to practicing law.
Suffered a stroke in 1918 and died of heart disease in 1919, buried at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.
