Death

  • Served as United States Representative from Maine from 1825 to 1833.
  • Attended common schools and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1813.
  • Studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1816, and commenced practice in Portland.
  • Elected a member of the Maine Senate.
  • Served as a Jacksonian Democrat in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses.
  • Chaired the Committee on Elections (Twentieth Congress) and the Committee on Naval Affairs (Twenty-second Congress).
  • Did not seek renomination in 1832.
  • Served as Mayor of Portland from 1833 to 1836 and again in 1842.
  • Appointed Maine United States Attorney from 1833 to 1836.
  • Appointed collector of customs for the Port of Portland from 1837 to 1841 and from 1843 to 1848.
  • Resumed the practice of law after his appointments.
  • Corresponded with President James K. Polk, inviting him to Maine during Polk’s presidency.
  • Died in Portland on August 21, 1853, and is buried in Town Cemetery in Windham, Maine.
